I have tried to learn Korean for too long. I remember reading through many textbooks, doing the fill-in exercises and wondering why I couldn’t partake in a normal conversation after I had finished plowing through a pile of such textbooks. The key is the lack of flow. In my understanding of learning, what sets it apart from simply perceiving (as we do when we scroll through a social media page) is the correct rate of repetition. I wrote:
Learning efficiency – In order to learn efficiently we need to turn a stream of information into a flow. This entails the following: 1) we have an expectation about the nature of the next item, in other words, we grasp the “whole” it is a part of; 2) we receive new information interspersed with reminders of things we’ve received before, at an optimal rate of repetition; 3) we engage actively with the flow to help long-term memory, in other words, we are truly inter-ested.
Here is a list of words I had tried to learn the old way. Don’t try this at home! Instead, watch videos and never ever blame yourself when you don’t know a word.
